The Chavez Service Clubs organized hundreds of devoted volunteers to help rebuild San Diego’s back country after the devasting 2003 firestorms that burned thousands of acres, displaced an equal number of residents, and destroyed hundreds of homes. At the lakes, the volunteers planted large trees, installed bird, bat and duck houses, reseeded the lake fronts and performed trail work. This was the first time many of the inner city students visited a back-country camp area.
